Welcome to Class 2

A warm welcome from me, Mr Braidwood, class teacher and from the children of Class 2.  The philosophy of our classroom is that the children are always encouraged to make contributions in discussions, challenge themselves in their learning and set their sights high, aspiring to be the best that they can be. Our bright, welcoming classroom is designed to be hands on for the children, allowing them to approach their learning in a variety of different ways.

Our learning follows the National Curriculum requirements for Year 2 and 3, focusing our learning on English and Maths in the mornings and foundation subjects in the afternoons. Staying active, we have two P.E. sessions a week where the children are encouraged not only to learn about different sports and disciplines, but also about how to stay healthy and the benefits of exercise. As a Christian school the children are invited to explore their own spirituality in weekly R.E. and PSHCE sessions. We foster a strong sense of mutual understanding, tolerance, and individuality that helps to make this a happy environment for both children and staff to work our best, every day.

In class 2 we also have regular homework ranging from weekly tasks to longer projects where the children are encouraged to put their own stamp on their learning.

I always aim to provide opportunities for the children to learn in new ways and in new environments which provides a change from the day to day. Past excursions for the children include trips to the National Railway Museum in York and The Deep in Hull and even walking trips around our local village of Helperby to explore the area in which we spend a lot of our week. We are also lucky to have our classroom helper Mrs. East come in to hear the children read every morning. This is a lovely opportunity to encourage children to read for pleasure.

Here, we have a desire to push learning forward, help one another and to always try our very best which is woven into Class 2, making it a fantastic place to work and learn in every day.

We kick off our start to 2017 with an exciting and busy term ahead! Please feel free to pop in after school and say hello or arrange a time to meet if you have any questions about your child’s education.

Class 2 Spring topic: Under the Sea!

Take a deep breath and join Class 2 in an exciting voyage beneath the waves in our topic: Under the Sea. We have set our sights on learning about each of the distinct oceans of the world and on the variety of creatures that live under the sea. We will be reading world maps, exploring the depths of deep sea trenches and finding ways to describe some truly weird and wonderful animals that dwell beneath the surface. We will explore how the oceans are used and also how important it is to care for marine habitats across the globe.

English

In English this term the children will be developing their story-telling skills to create a tale about an angry sea creature – linking with our Class topic. We will also examine myths about lost cities such as Atlantis and tie this in with other areas of the curriculum.

Science (Y2)

This term, the year 2 children are learning all about different Materials and their Properties. They will discover different characteristics and descriptions of materials and investigate their uses in hands-on projects, such as building a terrifying Materials Monster and by looking at materials in action in everyday life.

Science (Y3/4)

The Year 3/4 children are tucking in to a topic on Eating and Digestion this term. First, we will explore why different creatures eat different things and how animals adapt to suit what food sources are around them including how they link together in food chains. Next, we will learn about teeth and conduct investigations on finding the best ways to keep them healthy. We will then round off the term by exploring the intricacy of digestive systems. Plenty of food for thought.

P.E

P.E sessions this term will take place on Monday and Thursday. On Monday, P.E will be an indoor session of dance linking with our Under the Sea topic. On Thursdays, the children will have a split session where the Year 3s join KS2 children in swimming sessions at Thirsk while the Year 2 children practise sport skills at school.

Numeracy

During the term, we are continuing to build on and develop our knowledge of number work and place value in daily short arithmetic sessions. We will also focus our learning on Telling the time (including analogue and digital times, days of the week and months of the year). Following this, we will develop our understanding of fractions and shape. We will be solving challenging problems linked to all these areas of learning and developing useful strategies to help us.

Computing

Over the coming term, we will be developing our skills in coding using Scratch 2 and we will also be creating multimedia presentations linking to our Topic and English work.

French

This term in French, children will be learning about animals!
