A warm welcome back to school after what we hope has been a fun-filled and relaxing summer holiday. I am delighted to be joining the school for Mrs Anderson’s maternity cover. I will enjoy bringing my experience, creativity and energy to the classroom, whilst striving to support every child to make maximum progress. We have high expectations for each pupil, and we hope that they will enjoy and further develop their own love of learning throughout years 5 and 6. Our aim for children in upper key stage 2 is for our children to further develop their resilience, even when presented with difficult challenges, which will help them not only to prepare for SATS, but for secondary school and life ahead.

Our learning follows the National Curriculum requirements for Year 5 and 6, focusing our learning on English and Maths in the mornings and non-core subjects in the afternoons. Our topic work this term will have a geography focus on rivers and coasts, mountains and volcanoes and we will be making many links in our learning with history, science, art, literacy and numeracy.

In English this term, the children will be focusing on narratives and short stories, non-chronological reports and persuasive writing. Our class story will be Michael Morpurgo’s ‘King of the Cloud Forests’, which will link into numerous pieces of skills work. Our numeracy learning this term will be focused on working with numbers to 10 000 000 and will move on to using all 4 operations (+, -, x and ÷), working with fractions, decimals and percentages, 2d and 3d shape, units of time and data handling throughout this term. In science, the children will be exploring properties and changes of materials in the first half term, followed by electricity in the second half term.

We have two P.E. sessions a week, on Wednesdays and Fridays, which will be focused on football and tag rugby this half term. Friday’s PE session will be taught by our specialist sports coach, Kellie Holdsworth. Next half term, our PE focus will be on netball and hockey.

Homework this term will be focused on spelling, comprehension skills, punctuation, grammar and maths, as well as ongoing reading. Homework will be sent home on a Friday to be handed in the following Wednesday. Spelling words will be given out on a Monday to be tested on the following Monday. These will cover the statutory spelling word list and spelling patterns for Year 5 and 6, the revision and refinement of skills, as well as helping to extend children’s vocabulary and word comprehension skills.

Mr. Wilson will be our Teaching Assistant in Class 3 this year and we are very lucky to have his expertise to help further our progress and support the educational outcomes of the children. Mrs Hayne will cover PPA time on a Thursday afternoon, when she will be teaching French and Music, and Mrs Laity will also be teaching singing on a Thursday afternoon.

As always, please feel free to come into school to see us, or write a note in the pupil diaries if you have any concerns. You are all very welcome at 3pm on a Friday to come to our School Celebration Assembly in the Hall where children share good work and achievements.
