North Star Alliance

St Peter’s are very proud to be members of North Star and Polaris Teaching School Alliances. North Star and Polaris formed a unique partnership in 2016 to support school improvement across North Yorkshire and work with around 70 primary schools in the region. Our collective aim is to improve outcomes for all children through a self-sustaining, dynamic system of school improvement and support across North Yorkshire and beyond. '

English (Literacy)

We believe that literacy skills are the core requirement for learning success – talking and listening; reading and writing.

Talking fluently, using a broad range of words is vital to children’s progress in reading and writing. We provide opportunities both in and out of class to foster this development. The children love our ‘pet’ assemblies when they can bring in a favourite pet to talk about or our ‘hobby’ assemblies.

Whilst many school libraries have fallen by the wayside, we value and invest in our extensive library which is updated regularly with help from the children.  We are rigorous in our teaching of letter sounds (phonics)and their application, which helps children to work out words when they start to read. We use the 'Read,Write,Inc.' Scheme as well as our own activities/games to embed phonics knowledge and skills.  Lots of wonderful stories and non-fiction books to choose from make learning to read fun.

Handwriting is important and we place great importance on ensuring children develop a fluent, neat, joined script using the 'continuous cursive' style recommended by handwriting experts.  When children can form each letter correctly and fluently we show them how to join up.  This can be at different ages for different children but is usually in Years 1 and 2. By the time children leave us at the end of Year 6 they have a fluent, joined handwriting style.  Opportunities to write are provided in all subjects – such as writing an explanation on seed dispersal in science to writing songs for an Easter Play. Wherever possible we give writing tasks a real purpose and audience. Spelling, punctuation and grammar (SPAG) are taught from reception according to the requirements of the National Curriculum.
