North Star Alliance

St Peter’s are very proud to be members of North Star and Polaris Teaching School Alliances. North Star and Polaris formed a unique partnership in 2016 to support school improvement across North Yorkshire and work with around 70 primary schools in the region. Our collective aim is to improve outcomes for all children through a self-sustaining, dynamic system of school improvement and support across North Yorkshire and beyond. '

Music

Children are taught music in small groups by a specialist teacher.

We love singing at St Peter’s Brafferton, so much so, that we hold the Platinum Sing-Up Award in recognition of our provision, an accolade held by about 100 schools nationally.

Each class has a half hour singing lesson a week from our qualified singing teacher.  We have a school choir who sing at events both in school and in the community.  Biannually Year 5/6 sing in ‘Young Voices’ – a singing extravaganza at Sheffield Arena.  We even teach parents and friends new songs in our end of week ‘Celebration Assembly’!

Musical Skills clubs start our youngest children off on the road to developing their musical listening and playing skills, prior to learning an instrument.  We can offer instrument lessons in drums, string, woodwind, guitar and brass.

We have a school band for children in Years 4 to 6 which rehearses weekly and performs at school and community events.

An opportunity to play in an orchestra is provided by our own music specialist teacher, Jess Hayne, who leads and runs weekly sessions for instrumentalists from 13 local schools. At the end of last year they toured all participating schools with their repertoire of songs; what a treat!

Many of our children also learn the piano, out of school, with Judith Laity, our singing teacher.

In March we have an informal concert when children who learn instruments both in and out of school have the opportunity to perform for an audience.  We enjoyed performances from all grades from beginner to Grade 6 this year.  The concert lasted about an hour, which gives you an idea of just how many children are involved in making music in our school!
