Swimming

The department of Education stipulates that, all schools must provide swimming instruction either in key stage 1 or key stage 2.

In particular, pupils should be taught to:

  • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres and should have achieved this by the time they leave primary school.
  • use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
  • perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations

Here at St Peters we use Thirsk Public Swimming Pool for our children’s swimming lessons. This consists of a ½ hour swimming lesson on Thursday mornings in the Spring term.
The cost is currently £3 per lesson and is payable weekly or ½ termly via Parent Pay. If lessons are paid ½ termly, a refund will be made at the end of term for lessons missed.

Children need a swimming costume, towel and hairbrush/comb, named, in a bag.  Some more experienced swimmers like to wear goggles. These can be brought in from home labelled or can be purchased at the pool.

Children are encouraged to bring a healthy snack to eat on the bus on their way back to school. This should be as healthy as possible, avoiding high sugar or salt content snacks please. A good example would be a piece of fruit or vegetables like carrot sticks.
