Our music curriculum is delivered across the whole school by specialist teachers, using a programme of work that has been developed to take advantage of local expertise and community events whilst looking at a wide range historical figures and of cultural genres.
Our intent in music lessons is to enable all children:
- To develop a lifelong love of music
- To develop skills in listening, composing, singing and playing instruments
- To be comfortable in expressing themselves through composing music, singing and playing instruments
- To be confident performing in front of an audience and to each other
- To learn to evaluate their own and others’ work and build on their achievements.
- To cross-fertilise their musical knowledge and skills with other aspects of the wider curriculum, including PSHE, mathematics, English, art, history, geography, dance and languages.
- To be use their musical skills to form links with our local community and to have the opportunity to develop their talents to a higher level, to take part in musical opportunities in the wider world.
Our implementation of music lessons will:
- Give every child access to a weekly singing lesson and a weekly curricular music lesson, learning active listening, composing, singing and playing instruments using music from a range of musical genres, historical periods and countries
- Enable every child to work at their own level, and make progress, regardless of their background, ability and existing skills and knowledge
- Use music in other areas of school life, including collective worship, PE and French lessons.
- Develop confidence in self-expression in both composition and performance, through school assemblies, school productions local community performances and wider events such as Young Voices.
- Record their work using appropriate technology and notation to enable them to evaluate and recall their achievements
- Provide choice from a wide range of instruments to play in a class band every summer term
- Enable instrumental skills to be developed further, through opt-in small group and individual lessons, and by signposting other playing opportunities outside school
- Hold performances and workshops in school led by experienced and professional musicians
Impact of music curriculum:
- Pupils experience a wide, rich set of musical experiences as audience and performers
- Pupils are confident, independent and resilient in music and in other aspects of school life
- Pupils have enjoyed listening to, playing, composing and learning about a wide range of music.
- Pupils take part in performances in school and have the opportunity to perform outside school. The wider community is aware of the musical talents of children at our school.
- Pupils have a firm foundation of musical knowledge and skills to carry on to secondary school and beyond
